PTI-backed candidate Suriya Bibi has made history by becoming the first woman to win the PK-01 seat from Chitral with 18,914 votes. She defeated JUI-F’s Shakeel Ahmad, according to provisional results released by the ECP.
Bibi said her decision to foray into politics was the result of the “marginalised state of women in the remote and backward areas of Pakistan in general and in my own constituency Chitral in particular”.
“After a thorough contemplation on the prevailing issues in my constituency, I realized that it was only the woman’s role in the development of the society that had been neglected and discouraged for decades again and again,” she said.
