SUKKUR: During the current monsoon season, Sukkur city of Sindh province has received heavy rains of 290mm rains in a single day breaking the “77-year record” of the city.

Sindh authorities claimed on Sunday that in 2022, 374mm of rain had been recorded in 12 days, while in the current spell, the city recorded 290mm of rainfall in just a single day.

However, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz rejected the Sindh government’s claim pertaining to the record-breaking rainfall in Sukkur.

Terming the claim “wrong”, the PMD expert said that 116mm of rain was recorded in Sukkur in 48 hours while Rohri near Sukkur recorded 134mm rainfall.

On the issue, Sindh Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani acknowledged the difference between the figures given by the PMD and the deputy commissioner.

Addressing a press conference on the Sindh Assembly premises, the Sindh minister said that the provincial government had its won “own way” of measuring downpours in each taluka while the PMD had towers only in specific areas to measure rain.
