The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced the establishment of an endowment fund of Rs100 million for fighting global warming and promoting green energy.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has said that they would continue to promote clean and green energy in the entire city.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), he said, has mentioned in its manifesto it would provide free electricity to the citizens.

He said that they have plans to shift the KMC building to a solar system. He said that they are removing posters and banners from all over the city. He was talking to media representatives after inaugurating a 100-kilowatt solar plant at the Kidney Hill Park on Saturday.

Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, Asif Khan, Karamullah Waqasi, Dil Muhammad and other leaders were also present on this occasion.

The mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, said that the solar plant would provide electricity to Kidney Hill, and “this type of solar plant will also be installed in other parks of the city”.

A technical review in this regard, he said, is underway to run the street lights from the solar plant. “The solar plant will save the KMC in paying electricity bills and we will sell this electricity to K- Electric,” he said, adding that the Pakistan State Oil has given Rs400 million to the KMC out of 500 million, and the rest will also be received soon.

The Kidney Hill Park is an important project of the city, and these types of facilities will be provided in more districts. Wahab said that more than 250,000 saplings have been planted in the Kidney Hill Park, many of which have now become trees.

The mayor said that KMC has the largest land in Karachi, but due to a lack of development work, this land was encroached in the past. “We want to work on the assets of the KMC,” he said, adding that Rs20 million have been spent on the solar plant of the Kidney Hill Park, this amount will be recovered in three years, and one-third of the money will be recovered from this project in one year.

He said that they want to use these assets wisely for clean and green energy. He said that they have not asked for money from anyone, and the KMC budget has been invested in the park.
